An introduction to textile industry and garment business
This article is part of a series in collaboration with Narisakti.
Textile industry in India is evergreen and blooming. It is believed in India, three commodities always see, food, medicine and education. What is missing in this assessment is that the sheer numbers of our population means, clothing will be a constant requirement. So today let us discuss about the textile industry and specifically look at our favourite garment.
Textile Hubs
Even though Gujarat is considered as the textile capital of the country, the top textile states are Andhra Pradesh, Telangana & Haryana. If we talk about growth and expansion, Haryana is losing out because there is no scope of further investment and minimum wages is too high. On the lower side, Punjab which once had powerful hubs in places like Ludhiana and Jalandhar are facing lack of funds and skill.
Textile industry needs heavy investment in infrastructure and skill. This push can only come from a stable govt. Ease of doing business is most important for this kind of industry.
Saree – the most irresistible garment in the world
In the history of mankind, the saree is perhaps the only clothing which has never changed in design and character.
Sarees constitute 45% of the total garment industry which is huge. If there is any formal function, a saree is the obvious choice. Any college farewell function, women students only select a saree. For any traditional function in the family, there is never a discussion beyond a saree.
Design innovation and Saree
Though there has been some changes over these hundred of years in design, but the real innovation is the variety of colours and patterns on the sarees.
The sheer variety of sarees in each state and culture makes it difficult to innovate. But yet we see so many designers and manufacturers innovate every day.
